ZF-TRW Airbag Settlement: $62M+ for Hyundai & Kia Owners - Class Action Law Updates

ZF-TRW Airbag Settlement: $149M+ for Hyundai, Kia, Toyota & Mitsubishi Owners

A sprawling class action lawsuit over defective airbag control units has resulted in settlements totaling more than $149 million for owners of millions of vehicles. The case, known as In re: ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units Products Liability Litigation, has produced separate settlements with multiple automakers, including Toyota (finalized in 2023), Mitsubishi, and most recently Hyundai and Kia, which received preliminary approval on April 14, 2025.

The Defect Behind the Litigation

At the heart of the lawsuit are Airbag Control Units manufactured by ZF and related companies. These critical safety components contain application-specific integrated circuits that can fail under electrical overstress, preventing airbags and seatbelts from deploying during crashes. The defect spans approximately 12.3 million vehicles built between 2009 and 2019 by FCA, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Toyota.

Court documents reveal that plaintiffs have linked at least eight deaths to airbag and seatbelt failures caused by these malfunctioning control units. Beyond the immediate safety threat, the lawsuit accuses defendants of concealing the defect from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and vehicle owners.

Where the Cases Stand

The litigation was consolidated in the United States District Court for the Central District of California in August 2019 under case number 2:19-ml-02905. Named defendants include ZF Active Safety and Electronics US LLC, ZF Passive Safety Systems US Inc., ZF Automotive US Inc., ZF TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., ZF Friedrichshafen AG, STMicroelectronics, Inc., Hyundai MOBIS Co. Ltd., and the automakers themselves.

Settlement negotiations have proceeded separately with different manufacturers, producing varied outcomes.

Breaking Down the Settlements

Toyota reached the largest settlement at $78.5 million, providing cash payments, credits, extended warranties, a loaner vehicle program, and additional benefits. That settlement received final court approval in 2023, with a claims deadline extending to December 11, 2028.

Hyundai and Kia agreed to a combined $62.1 million settlement that received preliminary approval on April 14, 2025. The objection deadline of August 25, 2025 has now passed.

Mitsubishi settled for $8.5 million in a deal that's already received final approval. Affected owners have until May 8, 2026 to file claims.

Litigation continues against the remaining defendants who haven't yet reached settlement agreements.

Who Qualifies for Payment

Eligibility hinges on whether you purchased or leased a vehicle from one of the defendant automakers during the affected production years (2009-2019) and whether that vehicle contained a defective airbag control unit. Most settlements don't require proof of purchase, though specific criteria vary depending on which manufacturer built your vehicle.

Because each settlement has distinct requirements, vehicle owners need to consult the specific settlement website corresponding to their automaker to confirm whether they qualify.

Filing Your Claim

The settlement administrator created separate portals for each manufacturer to handle claims. Here's how the process works:

Start by identifying which automaker produced your vehicle. Then visit the appropriate settlement website—Hyundai and Kia owners should go to www.acusettlement.com/hyundaikia, Toyota owners to www.airbagcontrolunitsettlement.com, and Mitsubishi owners to www.acusettlement.com/mitsubishi. Each site outlines specific eligibility requirements and provides the claim form.

Deadlines differ significantly by manufacturer. Toyota owners have until December 11, 2028 to file, while some other settlements have a May 23, 2026 deadline. Mitsubishi claimants face a May 8, 2026 cutoff. Missing these deadlines means forfeiting any compensation.

What Plaintiffs Allege

The lawsuit contends that defendants knew about the defective control units but kept that information from the public, federal safety regulators, and affected vehicle owners. The faulty circuits created what plaintiffs characterize as a serious safety hazard by disabling critical crash protection systems—airbags and seatbelts—at the moment they're most needed.

The sheer scale of the defect affecting more than 12 million vehicles across six major automakers highlights the breadth of this product liability crisis and its implications for automotive safety.

What Vehicle Owners Should Do

If you owned or leased a vehicle from Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, or Mitsubishi between 2009 and 2019, checking your eligibility makes sense given the settlement amounts available. The combined settlements offer $62.1 million for Hyundai and Kia owners, $78.5 million for Toyota owners, and $8.5 million for Mitsubishi owners, distributed through cash payments, reimbursements, and extended warranties.

Time matters here. Each manufacturer settlement operates on its own timeline, and once your deadline passes, you lose the opportunity to claim compensation. The settlement websites contain all the information needed about deadlines, requirements, and how to submit your claim.

The litigation against non-settling defendants continues to move through the court system, though the multiple approved settlements already secured suggest courts view the defective control unit allegations seriously and recognize the substantial harm to affected vehicle owners.
